  1. Decide on the time line. When do you want to start your masters? Which year and semester?
  2. Financial Preparation
  3. Prepare for GRE and TOEFL
  4. Register for GRE and TOEFL exams
  5. Research on the universities, based on your interests
  6. Based on the scores you get from the sample tests, decide on the universities
  7. Take the tests. Report to four schools for free
  8. Prepare the required documents for application
    1. Transcripts (sealed)
    2. Degree certificate (sealed)
    3. Resume
    4. Experience Certificate
    5. Recommendation Letter (sealed)
    6. Bank Statement
    7. Affidavit of Support
    8. Statement of Purpose
  9. Report the exam scores to the universities
  10. Prepare the application package for each university you wish to apply and post them well before the deadline.
  11. Schedule Visa Interview (F1 Student Visa)
  12. Documents required for visa interview
  13. Fees for F1 Student Visa
  14. Block flight ticket?
  15. After finalizing the university, explore the university website and related forums and groups. Contact professors and find if any job opportunities available (Research assistantship, Graduate Assistant Ship, or any other on campus job). Seniors or current students in the university are good source of information about jobs.
  16. Get in touch with the Graduate Student Association of the university
  17. Join the groups/community of the prospective students. Attend the students meet in your area. Make friends while in your country.
  18. Reach the university a week early (preferably). Decide on roommates, house. Enquire about on-campus and off-campus housing. Look for part time jobs
  19. Old GRE vs New/Revised GRE - New GRE is effective since Aug 1, 2011.

    1. This page may have outdated information. Anyways all the best for your MS application process. Regarding money, it depends on university and location where you decide to study. It can vary drastically. Typically you would need to show cash to fund your first year of study and source of funds for the remaining period of study. This info is obtained from what I have heard from people from different forums.

    1. You have to write both GRE and TOEFL. But there may be universities which I am not aware of that require only one of them. Please check the requirements of the university you are interested in.

  11. All the information were very useful so far. I just want to try my luck.so, can I take the test first and then decide on choosing the university according to the score or should I shortlist the university prior to my test and bring it to their notice before taking the test?
If that is allowed can you please mention where I can register for the test (GRE)
    Thank You.

    1. Sorry for the delayed response. I believe you will be allowed to report the scores to some universities (for free) immediately after the test. So it would be better to shortlist the universities based on the practice test scores. Usually the practice test scores few days before the actual test will be very close to the actual score.

You can register for GRE test here

All the best for your MS application process.

  13. Hello, Where can I get the details of universities? What are the key factors to keep in my in mind while selecting the university?

    1. Key factors to keep in mind would be your goal and area of interest.
If your main goal is to get good job prospects - universities near the industry would be good. But if you go to the top universities, the location does not matter. You affordability also plays a role. See if you can cover the university tution fees, living expense. Some universities might offer tution waivers or discounts on case by case basis. Check with current students about the living expenses. If money is not a problem, and if you think you have good profile to get in top school, aim for them and keep a couple of less ranked universities located near companies in your field of study.
